At that time, it was considered unladylike to play soccer. But she moved to Virginia as a teenager, where she was able to play soccer and help lead her high school soccer team to a state championship.

Jill Ellis, a USSF Pro-Coaching Licence holder, has been a professional coach for over twenty years. She started her coaching career as a young player at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax. She went on winning the Under-21 Championship and the State Championship with her local Braddock Bluebelles team. She was also an All-American soccer player in college at William and Mary University. Ellis earned her awards as a coach even though her playing days were during her early twenties.
Ellis is a former coach and has extensive management experience. Ellis has held many leadership positions, including that of the Development Director of the United States Soccer Federation. She was an assistant coach of the U.S. Women's National Team and coached women’s youth teams. Ellis was appointed interim coach of the senior women’s national team in 2012 She was an interim coach for 2 matches in 2014 and holds a USSF Pro coaching certificate.
