She was named MVP and was the league's most valuable player. Jill Ellis (the head coach for the U.S. women’s team) noticed her performance, and she was there to watch a game. Afterwards, she received a text message from Ellis congratulating her.
Following the news that the team would be last in the NWSL, McDonalds was initially reluctant to relocate to Buffalo. In the offseason, she was working in a Amazon factory and was in a difficult financial situation. Despite the hardships of providing for her family, and struggling to make a five-figure income, she continued to work.

The birth of her son Jeremiah McDonald in 2012 left McDonald with a large number of challenges. Her son was born in 2012, and she only returned to soccer a few weeks later. She was unable to continue practicing because of her injury to her knee. She returned to soccer after being unable to practice for some months.
