Assam sprinter Hima Das holds the Indian national record for the 400m with a time of 50.7 seconds. Her father was a farmer, and she showed her natural talent for running at an early age. Her high school teacher encouraged her to sprint. For her achievements as a sprinter, she was presented with the Arjuna Medal by the President in India.

Usha began her career in athletics as a junior when she was 14 years old. In 1974, her school won the title of champion. She went on to win four Gold Medals at the National School Meet, and the National Amateur Meet. She also broke two records at Nagpur, India in 1979. After a successful run career, Usha attended Providence College Calicut and Mercy College Palghat. O. M. Nambiar her athletics coach encouraged her at Providence College. He gave her the opportunity for participation in sports events.

Before that, she was an avid gymnast and ran the 800m, 1500m. But, she decided to switch to running after speaking with a coach. She competed in road races after that and is currently the Indian record holder in both the 10,000m- and 20km racewalk events.
