They defeated Olympic gymnast Simone Biles of the United States and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady of the USA, who were both finalist for the award. The list also includes Lindsey Vonn and Katie Ledeck, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Men's competitors include Lionel Messi, Michael Phelps, and Lionel Messi.

He was controversially viewed as the NBA's star player in 2010 and this honor was huge for him. He was at first viewed as a villain when he left the Cavaliers in favor of the Miami Heat. However, he quickly rose to prominence. He was awarded the MVP award, and he won three NBA championships within a span of ten years.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is the Female Athlete for the Decade. She has been dominating the tennis court for the past decade. She was selected by AP's beat writers and sports editors based upon her accomplishments on the court and off. She won 12 Grand Slam singles titles, became a mother for the first time, fought against racism and sexism in the athletic community, and became a role model for young women.


She has won multiple singles titles since 2007, including 12 Grand Slam titles. This feat is unmatched by any other woman. She also holds the record of Steffi Graf's longest consecutive week at the top, being the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam Singles Trophy. Serena has also won 37 singles titles in 19 majors.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is the most famous soccer player. He's not only the best goal-scorer in the history and tradition of soccer, but also one of football's greatest free-kick takers, passers, and dribblers. Messi has more dribbles and passes through the penalty box than any other player. His dominance of the game is so great that he was given the nickname Ruthian. Although the word doesn't exist in every dictionary, it is used on the sports pages as an indicator for Messi.

Messi is not only a top-flight soccerplayer, but he has received many other awards and honors throughout his career. Two times, he was named to Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World. Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential individuals in 2011 and Laureus World Sportsman of the Decade. His career earnings total $1 billion. As a 13-year-old, Messi began his career at a Barcelona youth center. Since then, he has won six La Liga titles.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete of the decade. Phelps is the most decorated athlete of all time with his 22 Olympic medals. He also won eight golds at Beijing Games 2008. He also holds the record for winning more national titles, World Championships, and World Championships than any swimmer.

His Olympic accomplishments have helped make his name synonymous with swimming. Michael Phelps, despite his prolonged absence from competition has not let up. He established a foundation to teach children how to swim and promote the sport. His foundation, which provides funding for swim training programs and teaching the basics to children, has been more time-intensive. His old friends send him texts asking when he'll be back to compete.
